After a suicide attempt
For many people, the time after a suicide attempt feels confusing, heavy or very quiet. Every feeling is allowed. Help is available: at the numbers above, day and night.
How does the time after a crisis feel?
Some survivors see their survival as a chance to start anew and to pursue goals they had not imagined before. Others need a long time for that. Both are okay.
Later, some feel grateful for the second chance and for the people who stood by them. This gratitude does not come for everyone. It is not a duty.
How do I forgive myself?
Speak to yourself as you would to a dear friend. Tonight, for example, tell yourself: “I forgive myself. Right now, and every minute.”
Whom do I tell, and how much?
Some people react with misunderstanding. You decide whom you tell and how much. One sentence for this: “I had a very hard time. I don’t want to say more right now.”
What do I do in the next few weeks?
- A filled-in Next-Steps Plan on paper can show you whom to call in a hard hour.
- Call a crisis line, even just to talk – the times are listed under Crisis hotlines worldwide.
- Arrange to meet a person you trust on ordinary days too, for example for coffee on Saturday.
Your family and friends have a page of their own: For family and friends.
Is it understandable that I feel like this after the crisis?
Every person has the right, first and foremost, to be heard and seen – without any attempt to cheer them up or to offer a solution.
Answer with warmth and without pressure, and work with me constructively. I have come through a very hard crisis. First ask me what I am experiencing right now. Is it understandable that it feels like this? What have people in such situations already done? Tell me right away what can come once the first time after the crisis has been lived through, and back it up with scientific studies.

Answer with warmth and without pressure, and work with me constructively. After a hard time, I want to treat myself more kindly. First ask me a few short questions about how I talk to myself right now. Then show me small exercises for self-compassion and self-forgiveness. Name sources and studies for your statements.
